Design and working principle
The core principle of a twin roll press is the combination of filtration, displacement washing, and pressing.
- Dewatering Process: Pulp, at a concentration of 3%-10%, is pumped into a dewatering area formed by two rotating, porous rolls. The pressure forces the liquid through the roll filter plates, forming a continuous layer of pulp on the surface.
- Pressing Action: The pulp layer then passes through the narrow gap (nip) between the two rolls where it is squeezed to achieve a high dryness or consistency (up to 30-40%).
- Scraping and Discharge: Scrapers remove the pressed pulp from the rolls, which is then transferred by a screw conveyor for further processing.
- Washing System: Many units include integrated washing systems that use displacement principles to replace undesirable components (e.g., residual black liquor) with clean wash liquor, improving pulp purity with less water consumption compared to older technologies like vacuum washers.
