Confiner

A conical refiner is a key piece of equipment in papermaking that uses a rotating conical rotor against a stationary conical stator with metal bars (fillings) to mechanically treat pulp, improving fiber bonding, strength, and flow (freeness) for better paper quality and runnability. Pulp enters between the cones, gets forced through the narrow gap by intense friction, and exits refined, resulting in better fiber development and paper properties.

Technical data

Integrating a Permanent Magnet (PM) motor as a direct driver for a conical refiner offers several operational and efficiency advantages over traditional induction motor and gearbox setups.

Performance and Efficiency

  • Higher Energy Efficiency: PM motors are more electrically efficient than induction motors because no current is required to magnetize the rotor, leading to energy savings of up to 5% or more.
  • Elimination of Gearbox Losses: By coupling the PM motor directly to the refiner, the energy losses typically associated with mechanical gearboxes are eliminated.
  • High Power Density: PM motors offer a higher power-to-weight ratio, allowing them to deliver significant horsepower (up to 3,000 HP in some paper applications) within a much smaller physical footprint.
Precision Control
  • Zero Speed Slip: As synchronous motors, PM drivers have no nominal slip, which improves control accuracy and ensures the refiner operates exactly at the set frequency.
  • High Torque at Low Speeds: These motors provide high starting torque and stable performance at lower speed ranges (e.g., 200–600 rpm), allowing for more accurate fiber treatment and refined control over the refining gap.
  • Rapid Response: PM motors respond quickly to input signal changes, enabling precise, real-time adjustments to speed and position during the refining process.

Reliability and Maintenance

  • Reduced Maintenance: Eliminating the gearbox removes a common failure point that requires regular lubrication; this significantly extends bearing life, with some solutions lasting up to 23 years.
  • Simplified Design: With fewer moving parts and no need for pulse encoders in some advanced systems, the overall complexity of the drive system is reduced, leading to higher uptime and lower spare part inventory.
  • Lower Operating Temperatures: PM motors typically run cooler and quieter than induction counterparts, further extending the service life of the equipment.
