High Pressure Grinding Rolls
High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are highly efficient, energy-saving devices for crushing and grinding ores and minerals, often used as alternatives to traditional tumbling mills. They utilize two counter-rotating rollers to compress material through high-pressure interparticle crushing, resulting in reduced energy consumption, increased throughput, and, in many cases, superior product quality.
Design and working principle
Comminution principles: high pressure comminution and breakage process between rollers
- HPGR is pressure controlled, not gap controlled
- Product size is changed by controlling the pressure
- Size reduction by inter-particle grinding
- Inter-particle grinding increases grinding efficiency as pressure is transferred to the particle via multiple directions
- Breaking and fracturing of particles only happens when the material compressive strength is exceeded. Pressure controlled HPGR assures that the right pressure is applied for the specific material
- HPGR streamlines transition between crushing and grinding by accepting larger feed size than ball mills and producing finer size particles than cone crushers.

Technical data
Mechanism: Material is fed between two rollers—one fixed, one floating—that apply high pressure, causing particles to break against each other (interparticle grinding), rather than just against the machine surface.
Benefits:
- Energy Savings: Up to 50% less energy compared to conventional grinding circuits.
- Higher Throughput: Efficient for large-scale operations and increasing overall plant capacity.
- Improved Recovery: Creates micro-cracks in minerals, enhancing downstream leaching and flotation performance.
- Reduced Wear: Lower maintenance costs compared to SAG mills, with long-lasting studded tires that form a protective layer.
