SK3000E E Impeller Kneader

SUNKAIER SK3000E kneader, also known as a kneader reactor, is a horizontal, large-volume machine designed for processing highly viscous materials (up to 100,000 Pas) through concentrated phase operations. It is used in industries like polymers, food, and chemicals to handle sticky, pasty, or crust-forming substances.

Design and working principle

Working Principle

The SUNKAIER SK3000E kneader operates on the principle of intensive kneading and dynamic surface renewal at low shear rates.

  1. Concentrated Phase Processing: Unlike traditional stirred tanks that require solvents to manage viscosity, the kneader works directly in the concentrated phase. It uses mechanical energy to transform polymeric mass into free-flowing granules before viscosity peaks.
  2. Kneading Action: The rotation of the shaft(s) causes the kneading elements to intermesh, creating a "stretching and folding" motion. This provides excellent homogenization and prevents the "Wickel effect" (product wrapping around shafts).
  3. Thermal Control: Large heat-transfer surfaces (on the casing, shaft, and kneading elements) allow for precise temperature regulation. Highly exothermic reactions are often managed through evaporative cooling, where monomer or solvent evaporation removes heat.
  4. Axial Conveying: The low rotational speed (typically 10–100 rpm) gently conveys the product axially toward the discharge end. In continuous models, the discharge is often handled by a twin-screw conveyor or gear pump.

Features and Benefits

Design Features

This machine is designed to handle extreme rheological changes, transforming the product from liquid to paste and eventually to dry solid.

Shaft Configuration:

  • Single shaft: Utilizes a stirring shaft with kneading elements that mesh with fixed counterhooks attached to the housing.
  • Double shaft: Employs two high-torque shafts that rotate in the same or opposite directions.
  • The kneading elements mesh with each other to achieve deep surface renewal.
  • Mixing Elements: Composed of radially installed plates with dedicated kneading strips welded to their outer edges. These plates can be heated or cooled to meet thermal requirements.
  • Housing and Seals: The horizontal housing is jacketed for heating or cooling. The shafts are typically sealed with packing glands or mechanical seals to maintain vacuum or pressure levels.
  • Self-Cleaning: The meshing of kneading elements (with each other or with fixed hooks) ensures that the reactor is almost 100% self-cleaning, preventing dead spots and product build-up.
