Thickener/Clarifier

In industrial and water treatment processes, clarifiers and thickeners are both used for liquid-solid separation via gravity settling, but they differ in their primary objective: clarifiers focus on purifying the liquid (overflow), while thickeners focus on concentrating the solids (underflow).

Design and working principle

  • Clarifier Design: Characterized by larger diameters to maintain a low rise rate (upcurrent flow), which prevents fine particles from being carried out with the clean water. They often feature shallower tanks and more lightweight rake systems.
  • Thickener Design: Features higher side walls and steeper floor slopes to allow for longer mud residence time and increased compression of the settled solids. They require more robust drive and rake mechanisms to handle heavy, dense sludge.

Key Functional Differences

Clarifier Focus: Prioritizes producing a clear liquid with very low suspended solids, typically less than 100 parts per million (ppm). It is often used to recover reusable process water or remove turbidity.

Thickener Focus: Prioritizes increasing the density and concentration of solids in a slurry to create a thick sludge or paste. The quality of the liquid overflow is a secondary concern.

Feed Slurry Density: Clarifiers generally treat low-density slurries (less than 5% solids), whereas thickeners handle higher concentrations to produce underflows that can range from 35-50% solids by weight.
