Slurry Drying & Solvent recovery

SUNKAIER separation provides a specialized range of thermal separation technologies for continuous slurry drying and solvent recovery, particularly for heat-sensitive or highly viscous materials.

Design and working principle

A slurry drying and solvent recovery system works by heating a liquid-solid mixture to evaporate the liquid (solvent) and then condensing that vapor back into a pure liquid for reuse. This process is essential in industries like lithium-ion battery manufacturing (NMP recovery), pharmaceuticals, and chemical processing.

The system operates on the principle of distillation—using differing boiling points to separate components.

  • Vaporization (Drying): The wet slurry is fed into a dryer (e.g., paddle, rotary, or spray dryer). Thermal energy from steam or hot oil heats the slurry, causing the solvent to evaporate into a vapor state.
  • Solvent Capture: An inert carrier gas (often Nitrogen) or vacuum system sweeps the solvent-laden vapor out of the drying chamber.
  • Condensation (Recovery): The vapor passes through a condenser where it is rapidly cooled by chilled water or brine. The vapor condenses back into a liquid.
  • Purification: The recovered liquid may undergo fractional distillation or membrane filtration to achieve high purity (up to 99.9%) before being returned to the production line.
